Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Rotator cuff injury: The shoulder joint is surrounded by the rotator cuff, set of muscles and tendons that keeps the upper arm bone's head firmly seated inside the shoulder's shallow socket. A shoulder injury to the rotator cuff may result in a dull pain that gets worse at night.

Bursitis: It is an inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that typically cushions the joint and promotes smooth movement.

Frozen shoulder:

When the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the shoulder stiffen, movement becomes painful and difficult. This is called Frozen Shoulder and is very painful for patients even to make slight movements as the disease progresses.

Arthritis in the shoulder joint: Shoulder arthritis develops when the cartilage on the ball and/or socket sides of the shoulder joint begins to wear out. Shoulder arthritis symptoms might include discomfort, stiffness, and a restricted range of motion.

Cervical radiculopathy or Pinched Nerve: A pinched nerve happens when a neck nerve becomes inflamed or squeezed where it splits off from the spinal cord. This could result in numbness and weakened muscles, as well as pain that spreads into the arm and/or shoulder.

Avascular necrosis: The destruction of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply is known as avascular necrosis. It is also known as osteonecrosis, and it can result in minor fractures and bone collapse. Lying down or putting weight on the injured joint may cause pain.

Broken collarbone: It is a break in the bone that connects the shoulder to the breastbone. Swelling and more severe pain when moving the shoulder are common symptoms.

Dislocated shoulder: An injury known as a dislocated shoulder occurs when the upper arm bone pops out of the shoulder blade's cup-shaped socket. Since the shoulder is the body's most mobile joint, dislocation is possible. Seek immediate medical assistance if you think you may have a dislocated shoulder.

Shoulder Impingement: The rotator cuff rubs on your humerus and the top outer edge of your shoulder, causing shoulder impingement syndrome. Rubbing causes inflammation to increase and the area to become more congested, which causes pain and irritation.

Heart attack: Heart attacks can present as chest pain radiating to shoulder, as nerves carrying pain signals to the heart and arms share some common nerve fibres.

How Shoulder Pain Effects The Body

Shoulder pain might affect your sleep, which in turn can worsen the condition. All the above conditions may restrict your daily activities forcing you to take ample bed rest and use straps, belts or supports which hampers your overall body’s performance and posture in due course of time. When it comes to daily activities like getting dressed, concentrating, driving or sleeping, shoulder pain can range from being slight and easily ignored to being severe and interfering with such activities. A frozen shoulder and a decreased range of motion can occasionally result from shoulder pain.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Shoulder Pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

AVOIDING HEADACHE TRIGGERS

Avoiding headache triggers: Avoid the things that trigger your headaches if you are mindful of them, such as avoid skipping meals, caffeine, alcohol, or loud noise.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.

MIND CALMING ACTIVITIES

By assisting you in managing your stress, hypnosis, deep breathing, visualization, meditation, and yoga may all help you feel better. For tension headaches, it might be especially beneficial. Additionally, hypnosis may lessen your pain perception.
