Common Causes of Chest Pain

Heart-Related: Many types of heart conditions can result in chest uneasiness like heart attacks, angina, aortic dissection and pericarditis

Digestive Causes: There are specific digestion-related disorders like GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), pancreas problems & swallowing disorders which can cause Chest pain too.

Lung Related: Pulmonary embolism, pleurisy, collapsed lung due to pleural effusion, and pulmonary hypertension are some lung conditions contributing to Chest Pain.

Musculoskeletal Pains:

Costochondritis An inflammation of the cartilage in the rib cage is called costochondritis. Costochondritis can result in mild to severe chest pain. The costochondral joint, or chondro- sternal junction, where the upper ribs join the breastbone, also known as the sternum, is typically affected by the disorder.

Intercostal Neuralgia The intercostal nerves are involved in intercostal Neuralgia, which is neuropathic pain. Below the ribs, these nerves emerge from the spinal cord. Your chest wall and upper trunk are typically painful due to intercostal Neuralgia.

Pectoral Muscle Spasm is a spasm of the major and minor chest muscles. The large muscle that dominates the chest region is called the pectoralis major. The humerus rotates inward with bad posture, which includes rounded shoulders and greater mid-back (thoracic) curvature, which causes compensatory tightening of these chest muscles causing mild to severe pain.

Tietze syndrome Chest pain and swelling of the cartilage of one or more upper ribs (costochondral junction), specifically where the ribs attach to the breastbone, are two symptoms of the uncommon inflammatory condition known as Tietze syndrome (sternum). Pain may be sudden in onset or gradually progressing and may radiate to the shoulders or arms.

How Chest Pain Effects The Body

There may be pressure, fullness, burning, or tightness in your chest when you have chest discomfort. Occasionally, you may experience excruciating or searing back, neck, jaw, shoulder, and one or both arm pain. Chest pain may last more than a few minutes, worsens with exercise, disappear, reappear, or change in intensity. Some patients also report difficulty in breathing. All the above-said conditions may restrict your daily activities, forcing you to take ample bed rest and may hamper your overall body’s performance and posture in due course of time. When it comes to daily activities like walking, running, driving or sleeping, Chest pain can range from being slight and easily ignore to being severe and interfering with such activities.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Chest pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

A chiropractor manipulates your muscles and joints to provide pain relief. While some people opt to go to them, the root cause is sometimes not ascertained by them which may lead to aggravated pain conditions at a future stage. It is always advisable to consult your doctor to determine if visiting a chiropractor is the right course of action for you.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.
