Common Causes of Hip Pain

Arthritis Different types of arthritis exist, and many of them have an impact on the Hip or Lower Back. It can be challenging to walk and indulge in things you enjoy.

Osteoarthritis of the Hip: It occurs due to gradual breakdown and loss of cartilage in one or more joints due to wear and tear over time. The friction makes your hip hurt, become stiff, and joints sometimes swell.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Hip: It is an autoimmune illness that develops when your immune system erroneously targets your own body tissues and joints. Pain, swelling, inflammation, and stiffness around the Hip are common symptoms.

Psoriatic Arthritis of the Hip:

This inflammatory condition results in joint discomfort and swelling. The majority of patients also have psoriasis, a skin disorder that results in rashes that are red, scaly, and irritated.

Ankylosing Arthritis of the Hip: While typically affecting the spine, this type of arthritis can also result in hip pain while sitting.

Trochanteric Bursitis: Bursitis is a painful ailment that affects the bursae, which are tiny sacs filled with fluid that act as cushions for the muscles, tendons, and bones close to your joints. Bursitis develops when bursae swell up. Bursitis frequently develops in joints that experience regular repetitive motion, such as one in the Hip.

Hip labral tear: The labrum is the cartilage ring that encircles the hip socket and holds the thighbone's ball in place. When it ruptures, it causes hip or groin pain restricts motion, and gives the impression that the Hip is locking, catching, or clicking.

Sprains: When a muscle or ligament that supports the Hip is overstretched or damaged, it can cause a hip strain or sprain. Hip sprains are a pretty common injury that happens after a fall. Even minor hip sprains can result in chronic discomfort if untreated. Swelling, tenderness and even pain that radiates into the legs are among the symptoms.

Osteonecrosis (Avascular necrosis): A painful condition of the Hip where the blood supply to the hip joint (femur's head) is cut off. Osteonecrosis can ultimately result in the breakdown of the hip joint and severe arthritis because bone cells require an uninterrupted blood supply to remain healthy.

Hip impingement: The hip bones also can fuse abnormally and restrict movement due to various strenuous exercises. In addition, This painful condition, when left untreated, can result in osteoarthritis prematurely.

How Hip Pain Effects The Body

Hip pain can result in thigh or leg pain, just as hip and knee pain are linked. Arthritis may restrict your motion at the hip joint due to stiffness resulting in an altered gait. You limp due to the pain, which stresses your calf muscles. Besides the groin and thighs, the distribution of pain in hip joint issues may also run down the front of the leg, the lower back, or the buttocks. All the above said conditions might restrict your daily activities, forcing you to take ample bed rest and to use straps, supports, or lumbar belts, which hampers your overall body's performance and posture in due course of time. When it comes to daily activities like walking, running, driving or sleeping, Hip pain can range from being slight and easily ignore to being severe and interfering with such activities.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Hip Pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

AVOIDING HEADACHE TRIGGERS

Avoiding headache triggers: Avoid the things that trigger your headaches if you are mindful of them, such as avoid skipping meals, caffeine, alcohol, or loud noise.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.

MIND CALMING ACTIVITIES

By assisting you in managing your stress, hypnosis, deep breathing, visualization, meditation, and yoga may all help you feel better. For tension headaches, it might be especially beneficial. Additionally, hypnosis may lessen your pain perception.
