Common Causes of Knee Pain

Arthritis More than 100 different types of arthritis exist, many of which impact the knees. It can be challenging to walk and indulge in things you enjoy.

Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Eventual breakdown and loss of cartilage in one or more joints due to wear and tear over time. The friction makes your knees hurt, become stiff and sometimes swell.

Rheumatoid arthritis of the Knee:

It is an autoimmune illness that develops when your immune system erroneously targets your body's tissues. Pain, Swelling, inflammation, stiffness and warmth around the Knee are common symptoms.

Psoriatic arthritis of the Knee: An inflammatory condition which results in joint discomfort and swelling. The majority of patients also have psoriasis, a skin disorder that results in rashes that are red, scaly, and irritated.

Sprained ligaments: Knee sprains are a common injury after a fall or minor damage to the Knee. Pain, Swelling, tenderness around Knee, and pain radiating down the foot are among the symptoms. Even minor knee sprains can result in chronic discomfort if left untreated.

Meniscus tears: Between your shinbone and thighbone, there is firm, rubbery cartilage called the meniscus that serves as a stress absorber. It may tear if you suddenly twist your Knee while standing.

Knee Tendinitis: The thick, fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones through tendons experience irritation and inflammation due to tendinitis. The patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap (patella) to the shinbone and enables you to run, leap, and kick, can become injured and cause this irritation. Patellar tendinitis can occur in runners, skiers, bikers, and those who participate in jumping sports and hobbies.

Runner's Knee: In front of the Knee, the patient experiences a dull pain known as the runner's Knee. It is not limited to runners, as the name suggests. They are often in people with structural flaws, gait changes, or running styles. The kneecap may rub, grind, or click due to the symptoms. Running should be avoided until the soreness subsides.

Bursitis of the Knee: Bursitis is a painful ailment that affects the bursae, which are tiny sacs filled with fluid that act as cushions for the muscles, tendons, and bones close to your joints. Bursitis develops when bursae swell up. In joints that experience regular repetitive motion, bursitis frequently develops.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Young people who still have developing bones and other knee components experience this problem. Where a tendon from the kneecap joins to the shin below the Knee, it may result in a painful lump. This region frequently hurts from overdoing activity and inflammation at the tibial tubercle, a point on the bottom of your Knee. Particularly teenage boys and girls are prone to it.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome can occur due to muscle imbalance, tension, and leg alignment issues. It results in knee pain and sporadic "buckling" when your Knee suddenly becomes unable to support your weight. Women experience it more frequently than men do.

How Knee Pain Effects The Body

Chronic knee joint pain can be debilitating. When it comes to daily activities like walking, running, driving or sleeping, Knee pain can range from being slight and easily ignored to being severe and interfering with such activities. Simple actions like sitting in a low chair or taking a flight of stairs can become difficult. The inability to participate in your preferred hobbies or sports may demoralize you. All the above conditions may restrict your daily activities, forcing you to take ample bed rest and use knee supports or belts, which hampers your overall body’s performance and posture in due course of time.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Knee pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

A chiropractor manipulates your muscles and joints to provide pain relief. While some people opt to go to them, the root cause is sometimes not ascertained by them which may lead to aggravated pain conditions at a future stage. It is always advisable to consult your doctor to determine if visiting a chiropractor is the right course of action for you.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.
