Common Causes of Elbow Pain

Tennis elbow: Also known as lateral epicondylitis, it is a painful ailment that develops when the tendons in your elbow are overworked, typically due to repetitive wrist and arm motions. Despite its name, tennis elbow doesn't just affect athletes.

Golfer's elbow: The area where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inner side of your elbow becomes painful due to overuse. You may have pain in your forearm and wrist. The tennis elbow, which develops on the outer region of the elbow, is comparable to the golfer's elbow. It is not limited to golfers.

Tendinitis:

A tendon is a thick, fibrous band that connects muscle to the bone when inflamed or irritated tendonitis or tendinitis. Just outside a joint, the disease causes discomfort and tenderness. Tendinitis can affect any of your tendons, although it most frequently affects the joints in and around your shoulders, elbows, wrists or elsewhere.

Elbow Sprain: When the arm is bent or twisted fast or violently, it can cause an elbow sprain, which is an injury to the ligaments surrounding the elbow joint. The humerus, which is the bone of the upper arm, and the radius and ulna, which are the bones of the forearm, are connected to the joints in the elbow via ligaments in the elbow.

Osteoarthritis of the Elbow: It is caused due to eventual breakdown and loss of cartilage in one or more joints due to wear and tear over time. Patients of elbow osteoarthritis may experience stiffness, pain, bone grating or scraping, joint locking and joint swelling.

Rheumatoid arthritis of the Elbow: It is an autoimmune illness that develops when your immune system erroneously targets the tissues in your own body. The nerves leading to the hands may also be compressed by damaged or deformed elbow joints, resulting in the tingling and numbness in your fingers.

Bursitis of Elbow (olecranon): Bursitis is a painful ailment that affects the bursae, tiny sacs filled with fluid that act as cushions for the muscles, tendons, and bones close to your joints. Bursitis develops when bursae swell up. The olecranon (elbow) bursa is typically flat. More fluid will gather in the bursa if it gets irritated or inflamed and will manifest as bursitis.

Stress fractures: The effect of excessive and repeated stress can potentially harm the forearm bones at a microscopic level. Stress fractures are caused by repeated impact over time, as opposed to acute fractures, which typically develop due to a specific traumatic incident.

Trapped nerves: When one of your nerve passing through the elbow gets squeezed, it may produce numbness, burning sensation and pain in your forearm and hand.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, also called Ulnar nerve entrapment, is the condition when a nerve in your elbow becomes inflamed or swollen due to excessive pressure from bones, tendons, muscles, or cartilage. A pinched nerve can begin anywhere in your body but usually starts at joints.

Radial Tunnel Syndrome The radial tunnel, which is made up of a group of muscles, is where the nerve travels when it reaches your elbow. When the nerve is crushed or pinched as it enters the radial tunnel, we call it Radial Tunnel Syndrome. Your radial nerve is put under excessive pressure, frequently producing lingering pain.

How Elbow Pain Effects The Body

As your hands do the majority of our day-to-day works, your life is severely affected if you have pain in Hand or Elbow. You might experience pain or burning sensation on your elbow, discomfort when bending or twisting your arm, stiffness or pain when extending your arm, a tender-to-the-touch swollen elbow joint, and a weakening of your grip when you try to hold objects like a racquet, wrench, pen, or someone else's hand. All the above-said conditions may restrict your daily activities, forcing you to take a break from daily activities and to use braces or belts, which hampers your overall body’s performance and ability to grip items in due course of time. When it comes to daily activities like holding, gripping, lifting, driving or eating, Hand and Elbow pain can range from being slight and easily ignored to being severe and interfering with such activities.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Elbow pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

A chiropractor manipulates your muscles and joints to provide pain relief. While some people opt to go to them, the root cause is sometimes not ascertained by them which may lead to aggravated pain conditions at a future stage. It is always advisable to consult your doctor to determine if visiting a chiropractor is the right course of action for you.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.
