Women are twice as likely as men when it comes to migraine. And don't forget children, they have headaches too.  Most of these headaches can be dealt by changing our lifestyles or with help from a good specialist.

Common Causes of Head Ache

Migraine Headaches Primary cause is swelling of blood vessels (vasodilation), which in turn irritates nerves and muscles close to the skull that are sensitive to pain. This may be caused by stress, lack of sleep, changes in hormone levels, changes in weather conditions, skipping meals etc.

Cluster Headaches are more frequent but don't last as long as migraines. These headaches come in clusters and last for 15 min to 3 hours. You may experience a lot of them for a period and then no pain. The causes of cluster headaches is still unknown. You can be startled out of sleep in the middle of a night by a severe headache on one side of your head, usually near or around one eye.

Tension Headache

feels like a tight band around the head. The intensity may be increased with chewing. It can be caused by cervical spondylosis, sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, or TMJ syndrome.

Cervicogenic Headache Pain starts in the neck and spreads over head or face on same side. It is associated with cervical facet joint dysfunction.

Hypnic headaches: An unusual form of headache, you may wake up as a result of it because it only happens while you are asleep. Because it occurs at the same time every night of the week, it is frequently called an "alarm clock" headache. Some folks go through it each night.

Secondary Headaches

Brain Tumors which may or may not be cancer can cause headaches too. If you have new onset one-sided headache radiating down the back (spinal column), which increases with change in posture, it has to be thoroughly investigated using advanced imaging (MRI Scan) and needs specialist care.

Infections in your brain, such as meningitis, encephalitis, or sinusitis or an infection like flu or fever also cause you headaches. These must be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid any further complications or permanent damages.

Neck or head injury: Trauma to the head and neck (Whiplash injury) can cause headache and can be associated with pain in the nape region of the neck and/or occipital region due to involvement of facet joints and adjacent muscles.

How Elbow Pain Effects The Body

Your head hurts badly when you get a typical headache. When you have a migraine, you could feel like your head is about to blow up and even have a vomiting sensation. You simply can't push through them all the time. You might need to pause your activities until they pass, even if you're taking medicine. According to a study, due to severe headaches, your work hours get reduced by 23%, your enjoyment and involvement with family members and children get reduced by and your relationship with spouse gets hampered by 37%. All the above conditions may restrict your daily activities, forcing you to take ample bed rest and take medicines which hamper your overall body’s performance in due course of time.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of HeadAche conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

AVOIDING HEADACHE TRIGGERS

Avoiding headache triggers: Avoid the things that trigger your headaches if you are mindful of them, such as avoid skipping meals, caffeine, alcohol, or loud noise.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.

MIND CALMING ACTIVITIES

By assisting you in managing your stress, hypnosis, deep breathing, visualization, meditation, and yoga may all help you feel better. For tension headaches, it might be especially beneficial. Additionally, hypnosis may lessen your pain perception.
