Some Facts About

Foot & Ankle Pain

Your feet and ankles each have 26 bones, which come together to form 33 joints. These comprise more than a fifth of the 206 bones in your body collectively. More than 100 soft tissue components, such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles, support the bones in your feet. A person's feet are a guide to general health status. Diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease are just a few ailments that often start in the feet. Any injury or pain in the feet and ankle decreases your mobility and ability to exercise, walk or run, further aggravating heart and lung complications along with sugar levels.

Common Causes of Foot & Ankle Pain

Achilles Tendonitis or Tear: The band of tissue that joins your calf muscles at the back of your lower leg to your heel bone, the Achilles tendon, can become inflamed from overuse. Also, the tendon may altogether rupture, causing immense pain.

Plantar fasciitis An irritation or inflammation of the tissue band that runs from the heel to the toes is known as plantar fasciitis. Stretching the feet and heels, as well as wearing supportive footwear, are part of the treatment.

Bursitis (joint inflammation)

Bursitis is a painful ailment that affects the bursae, which are tiny sacs filled with fluid that act as cushions for the muscles, tendons, and bones close to your joints. Bursitis develops when bursae swell up. Bursitis most frequently occurs in the shoulder, elbow, and hip. Bursitis can also occur around the base of the big toe, the heel, and the knee. Near joints that experience regular repetitive motion, Bursitis frequently develops.

Ankle Sprains Ankle sprains are a common injury after a fall or when the ankle is twisted. Even minor ankle sprains can result in chronic discomfort if left untreated. Swelling, tenderness, pain behind the ankle bone, and even pain that radiates into the foot are among the symptoms.

Ankle Arthritis More than 100 different types of arthritis exist, many of which impact the foot and ankle. It can be challenging to walk and indulge in things you enjoy.

Osteoarthritis of the Foot and Ankle: eventual breakdown and loss of cartilage in one or more joints due to wear and tear over time. Sometimes improper foot mechanics, like flat feet or high arches, lead to osteoarthritis development.

Post-traumatic arthritis An injury can cause osteoarthritis in the long run.

Rheumatoid arthritis of the Foot and Ankle is an autoimmune illness that develops when your immune system erroneously targets your body's tissues. The midfoot's supporting ligaments deteriorate, causing the arch to collapse. The foot typically collapses and points outward when the arch is lost.

Psoriatic arthritis of the Foot and Ankle is An inflammatory condition which results in joint discomfort and swelling. The majority of patients also have psoriasis, a skin disorder that results in rashes that are red, scaly, and irritated.

Metatarsalgia Foot pain and inflammation on the ball of the foot are symptoms of metatarsalgia. Additional factors include foot abnormalities and excessively tight or loose shoes. If you engage in activities that require you to run and leap, you may develop it.

Stress Fractures The effect of excessive and repeated stress can potentially harm the foot's bones at the microscopic level. Stress fractures are caused by repeated impact over time, unlike acute fractures, which typically develop due to a specific traumatic incident. Tiny cracks in the bones might develop when the supporting muscles and bones do not have sufficient time to recover between workouts.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome Anything that causes compression on the posterior tibial nerve is the leading cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Because the outward tilting of the heel that happens with fallen arches can induce tension and compression on the nerve, a person with flat feet is at risk for developing tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Why people still suffer in pain having these options ?

Let us now talk about what options you have when you are suffering from any of the above types of Foot and Ankle pain conditions

PAIN KILLERS

People get relief by taking acetaminophen (like Anacin, Panadol, Tylenol) or Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (like Advil, Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). But remember, all these can cause rebound headaches which can be challenging to treat. And long-term usage affects kidneys and liver.

SURGERY

For many pain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. However, there are several side effects, and potential complications associated with surgery. With the advancement in medical fields, there is more focus on avoiding surgeries especially for elderly people.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS

Many neurologists suggest these types of pills. But be aware, these can be seriously habit-forming, and if you use them indiscriminately, they can be hard to leave.

MUSCLE RELAXANTS

This category of medicines, though prescribed by some physicians, also have a short-term symptomatic relief, but used alone for long time may still not address the underlying cause.

HOME REMEDIES

Many patients choose to have their own choice of easily available at home remedies like doing slow range of motion exercises; using ice/heat packs on affected area of Back; having massage; or else sleeping on a firm ground or using stiff mattress or pillow. While these natural things can be better than taking medicines, they still don’t cure you of the root cause, but merely focus on giving you temporary relief.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

While Physiotherapy techniques like TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and IFT (Interferential therapy) alone may help in treating myofascial pains. But it is more effective if the underlying condition is addressed medically followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

A chiropractor manipulates your muscles and joints to provide pain relief. While some people opt to go to them, the root cause is sometimes not ascertained by them which may lead to aggravated pain conditions at a future stage. It is always advisable to consult your doctor to determine if visiting a chiropractor is the right course of action for you.

ACUPUNCTURE

Thin needles are inserted into the body at particular areas in an effort to reduce pain in the affected area of Back. While these can be beneficial for some, but you need 5 to 8 weeks of sessions. These too may give you temporary relief only.
